Magnetic fields hasten
bioremediation process

Research at the New Jersey Institute of Technology has revealed the effect of magnetic fields on the speed of biological activity during bioremediation.

Positively charged magnetic energy increases life growth and development within the bioremediation process, while negatively charged energy inhibits growth, according to the research.

Study results were published in the January edition of the British publication, Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology.

The paper was labeled a breakthrough by Gregory J. Provell, president of BioMagnetics Systems, which sponsored the research. Financial support also came in the form of grants from NJIT's Hazardous Substance Management Research Center and the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology.

"It [the study] clearly demonstrates that magnetism is not a homogeneous energy, but rather two separate and distinct energies with distinct effects on living systems," Provell said. Albert Roy Davis and Walter C. Rawls Jr. of BioMagnetics International were the first to discover that (separate) magnetic fields but not the first to talk about magnetic fields on humans.

In the NJIT study, researchers found that focusing positive energy on a bioreactor resulted in the highest average rate of biodegradation and oxygen consumption.

The new technology was field tested by Environmental Management Services Inc., of New Jersey, during a biodegradation project at a coal tar site. There, the levels of carcinogen fell during a five month period by more than 24%, surpassing projections by 144% and taking only 40% of time expected.

Further studies show positively charged energies speed the fermentation process used in manufacturing pharmaceuticals and developing alcohol, dairy and agricultural products. Studies will also examine the effects of magnetic energy on the human aging process and how negatively charged magnetic energy affects cancerous cell growth.
